How to Dispose of a Sofa or Upgrade it
Recycle & Upcycle Your Old Sofa With These Tips
Did you know that in the UK alone, 672,000 tons of furniture goes to landfill each year, with a large majority of this being old sofas? In total, a report by the RSA states that Brits dispose of 1,600,000 tons of “bulky-waste” a year, with 42% of that being unwanted furniture. This is an alarming statistic indeed, and one that needs to change. Instead of taking it to a landfill, why not dispose of your old sofa using one of these suggestions instead?
Donate Your Old Sofa to Charity
There are a few charities out there that would love to take your old sofa. That is, providing it’s in a good, sellable condition. Bear in mind, that many charity shops simply don’t have the space to accommodate a whopping great sofa, but all the same, it’s worth looking around your local area.
Some charity shops own large furniture outlet stores dedicated solely to large furniture and electrical equipment. These are a great place to enquire about getting rid of your old sofa, or simply a place to shop around for a great bargain.
Before donating, you’ll need to make sure that the fire label is still attached to your sofa. Charities usually can’t accept soft furnished goods such as this without one. If you’re unsure where to find a fire label, we have a blog post for that.
Sell Your Old Sofa
This one seems pretty obvious, but you’ll be amazed how many people would rather take their sofa to a landfill than sell it! Chances are you invested a fair amount of money in your sofa when you first purchased it, why not get some of that money back? Of course, you’re unlikely to get back what you paid. Like cars, sofas generally depreciate in value the minute they leave the retailer. Try putting your sofa on the Facebook Marketplace, Gumtree, eBay or something of a similar nature. You may be surprised at what you can get, for what’s practically junk to you. People moving home are always looking for new furniture and are generally looking to keep costs down. As such, buying a sofa second-hand is usually a common choice.
Help a First Time Home Buyer With Your Old Sofa
This point follows on from number 2, but why not give your sofa away to a first-time homebuyer? You were going to dump the sofa anyway, why not do somebody a massive favour and give them your sofa. If you’ve ever moved into your first home, you’ll know how stressful and expensive it can be! A small act of kindness can go really a long way.
Take up a New Hobby
If you’re wanting to dispose of your old sofa because it’s beginning to look a little shabby, you could try taking up a new hobby instead; upholstery. Your old sofa could be your very first project. It might not turn out to be your best work, but it’s a start and who knows where it could lead to? In time you may become the greatest upholsterer of our age.
