Open Vs Closed Cell Foam
Foams can either be classified as open cell or closed cell. Now, this isn’t to suggest that the cells within the foam are entirely one or the other.
Foams can structurally consist of both open and closed cells. What classifies it as either is its ratio of open to closed cells. For example, an open cell foam is generally classified this way when more than half of its cells are open.
You can read more about closed cell foam on our dedicated page, where you can also buy sheets of Plastazote.
Open-Cell Foam Applications
Open-cell foam can be found utilised throughout a wide range of areas and industries.
If you’re sitting down whilst reading this, there’s a good chance that your seat is padded with open-cell polyurethane foam.
Because polyurethane foam has open cells, air can quickly escape when the foam is compressed and return when the compression is relieved. This influx and outflow of air is what helps to relieve the pressure you would otherwise feel on your body if you were sitting on a hard surface.
But open cell foam isn’t just useful for comfort. Pay a visit to some of the UK’s top recording studios and you’ll find open-cell acoustic foam lining the walls. This helps to improve sound quality, by enhancing room acoustics. It softens vulnerable reflection points throughout integral rooms, resulting in clearer live and recorded sound.
